Heroin Overdoses and Treatments at Ebb Center Treatment Centers
HEROIN OVERDOSES AND TREATMENT
Heroin is made from the resin of poppy plants but, it is highly addictive and lethal. It can be smoked, snorted or injected. There is also a huge increase in prescription opioid use. Drug overdose is the leading cause of accidental death in the United States. There were 55,403 Heroin overdoses and 12,990 deaths due to heroin overdoses in 2015. An overdose is a dangerous and often- times deadly consequence of heroin use. An overdose occurs when the heart and breathing rate is depressed from a large dose of heroin to the extent that the user cannot survive without medical help.
Heroin Treatments:
It is always best to seek treatment before overdose occurs, but for some, the first overdose is the 1st sign they have a problem.
Heroin overdose can be lethal if not addressed quickly. 911 should be immediately called. Let them know the user’s respiratory status, approximate time and the amount of ingestion. People with depression, certain medical conditions or who use high doses of heroin or combine heroin with other drugs are more likely to overdose.
Naloxene
Naloxone is an opioid receptor antagonist medication that can eliminate all signs of opioid intoxication and reverses the overdose by rapidly binding the opioid receptors, preventing heroin from activating them. Fortunately, Naloxone has been approved by many states for emergency responders to get trained in and administer.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) released an Opioid Overdose Prevention Toolkit in August 2013 that provides helpful information necessary to develop policies and practices to prevent opioid-related overdoses and deaths. The kit provides material tailored for first responders, treatment providers, and individuals recovering from an opioid overdose.
A doctor may prescribe medications to tape the opioid use, such as methadone. These medications replace heroin, filling the same opioid receptors in the brain and lessening the severity of withdrawal.
