When the prescription became something else.

Prescription opioid addiction often begins with a legitimate prescription — a back surgery, an injury, a dental procedure. Tolerance builds, doses increase, and eventually the medication becomes something the body can't do without. The original pain is no longer the only thing being managed. By the time someone recognizes the dependence, stopping on their own has become physically and psychologically difficult in ways that require real support.

The transition from prescription painkillers to street opioids — usually heroin or illicit fentanyl — is common and well-documented. When prescriptions run out, when doctors stop prescribing, or when the cost becomes unmanageable, people find other ways to manage withdrawal. Understanding that trajectory isn't about blame — it's about recognizing where people actually are when they ask for help, and meeting them there.

A note on detox

Opioid painkiller withdrawal requires medical management. Ebb Tide does not provide detox, but we treat the care that comes after. We work with Florida detox providers and can help coordinate the full sequence. Call us at (561) 567-0551 and we'll help you understand the next step.

How We Treat It

Painkiller treatment at Ebb Tide.

Prescription painkiller treatment at Ebb Tide addresses both the physiological aftermath of opioid dependence and the life circumstances that shaped it — which often include chronic pain, unresolved medical situations, and complicated feelings about how the addiction developed. Many clients feel shame about a dependence that began with a prescription. We don't share that view.

PHP provides the structure most clients need in early recovery, before stepping down through IOP and outpatient as stability increases. For clients who've already spent time in residential and need a structured step-down, IOP alone may be the right entry point. We assess each person individually. Florida Medicaid covers qualifying programs.
